Stone Forest, Varna

Stone Forest, VarnaJust outside Varna, on the old Devnya road which passes the airport, there is the geological wonder known as the ‘Stone Forest’.

On either side of the old A2 road heading west out of Varna, around 18km outside the city, you will see scrub land with large pillars of stone standing upright.

These strange rock formations were formed over fifty million years ago when two chalk strata of the earth’s crust fused together and pushed up these stone columns. There are hundreds of them, some just a couple of feet tall, some standing as high as two or three metres.

As use approach the site along the road, park up somewhere along the side. If coming from Varna direction the main entrance is on your left, where there is an explanation board and a small gift shop. It is 3 levs per person to enter and wander around this part.

However, if you cross the road you can wander around the stone columns on the right hand side for free. There are not as many here but you will get the general impression.

The spot takes only half an hour to walk around but if you are passing on the road, it is worth a quick stop of if you want a short trip out of Varna and a day away from beach. You will need your own car to get there though and beware of the snakes that are supposed to inhabit the area in large numbers, although we did not spot any.
